The fifteenth and sixteenth century Cù Lao Chàm / Hoi An shipwreck’s cargo consists of several different types
of ceramics. This essay introduces three types of blue and white ware, based on their external appearance of
glaze, decorations, and designs. In my doctoral research and for the purpose of this paper, the initial phase is a
Collection-based Research to identify Cù Lao Chàm shipwreck’s ceramic cargo in Vietnamese museums. In a
parallel study, my literature review explores across Asia Pacific Region shipwrecks and kilns with similar
ceramics contemporary to the Cù Lao Chàm shipwreck. My hypothesis is that the evolution of Vietnamese
ceramics during the fifteenth-sixteenth centuries CE are based on indigenous belief aesthetics that set criteria for
pottery artistry and kiln production. This work adds data in the current gaps of knowledge about Vietnam’s
ancestors’ role in ceramic production and exchange across the Asia Pacific Region during the initial stages of
European colonialism.
