for Understanding the Lashed-lug Boatbuilding Techniques.
for Understanding the Lashed-lug Boatbuilding Techniques.
Description
The article presents the methodology applied for the re-investigation and for the experimental reconstruction of
the Punjulharjo boat, the most complete Southeast Asian lashed-lug boat found to date. This work, based on
archaeological data, ethnographic, and iconographic sources, brought better understanding of the boat and of the
lashed-lug system. Archaeological data were gathered through direct observation of the Punjulharjo boat remains
displayed on the original finding location and examination of photos taken during the excavation.
The reconstruction approach was engineering and experimental, it consisted in producing hypothetical
representations of the Punjulharjo boat, in digital, virtual and 3D print form. As a result, the team identified
different lashing systems, hypothesized diverse uses of the lugs within the planking joinery and vertical structures,
illustrated the complexity of the planking pattern and hypothesized the aspect and location (or relocation) of the
beams, rudders, mast, and other superstructures.
